What Is Hi-Fi Audio, and Why Do I Need It?

A high-quality audio system is a must-have feature for any audiophile or music fan. Hi-fi audio is a term that is an abbreviation for “high fidelity.” This kind of equipment will give you the highest sound quality, which makes for better immersion in music and sound. People who use hi-fi audio will be able to “feel” the music much more, down to individual instruments and beats. It also helps to eliminate unnecessary noise and distortion, creating the best listening experience possible.

Here’s some information you should know about hi-fi audio and why it’s so important to install a high-end audio system in your Chicago home if you care about sound quality.

Hi-fi audio equipment

If hi-fi audio refers to the quality of the sound that comes from devices, then hi-fi audio equipment is the equipment that is capable of producing that high level of sound. This equipment includes speakers, headphones, sound bars and sound systems.

The opposite of hi-fi, then, is low-fi, which is essentially what you’d call the “raw” audio that includes imperfections. It is a much lower quality of sound that is more likely to feature distortions. If you compare the sound on an old vinyl record to a brand-new digital download, you’ll likely hear a lot of difference. There are some people who actually prefer lo-fi music because they enjoy those imperfections, and it might feel as though it’s something a bit closer to the “original” or “authentic” recording, but if you’re looking at objective sound quality, there’s really no comparison.

Hi-def audio is also a different term than hi-fi. Hi-def generally refers to video quality, but it can also be used to refer to digital music. Hi-fi audio equipment can deal with both digital and analog functions, whereas hi-def only focuses on digital.

Why hi-fi?

Hi-fi audio devices will, as we’ve already mentioned, provide you with the very best in sound quality. If you listen to a lot of music, or if you want to set up a big home theater installation and give yourself the most immersive sound, hi-fi audio is going to be the way to go.

There are some drawbacks associated with this. Obviously, because it’s the highest quality sound you’ll get for these systems, it’s going to come with a bit of an elevated price over low-fi systems. Hi-fi audio devices are in a premium equipment category, and will be priced as such. There are multiple “levels” of hi-fi equipment, though, and you don’t necessarily have to choose the most expensive options available to get outstanding sound results that fit your needs.

We recommend talking with a professional sound system installer before making a purchase. This experienced pro will have handled a lot of hi-fi audio systems in their day, and will be familiar with the various options available to you. Talk a bit about the goals you have for your audio system and they’ll be able to recommend some solutions for you at a price point you can afford.
