If you were lucky enough to see Disney’s Brave in 2012 at a theater equipped with Dolby Atmos technology, you were amongst the first to experience the latest 3D sound technology. Perhaps you were so immersed in your movie experience that you didn’t even realize that the sound was coming from all around you, making you feel like you’re actually in the movie, which is the point of Dolby’s newest product.
What is it?
3D films have been around since the 1950s and have recently seen some mainstream resurgence, especially in big blockbuster action movies. Up until a few years ago, it seemed like the only thing keeping us out of the 3D film was the outdated audial technology.
That’s where Dolby Atmos technology comes into play. Just as objects of 3D film come at you, Dolby Atmos technology creates 3D sound, sending up to 128 different channel tracks to different speakers spaced around the theater, especially in the ceiling. This technology allows sound to act as an object coming at you from all angles.
Where can I use it?
Obviously now that we have access to 3D TVs, we need 3D audio. Thankfully, the folks at Dolby have adapted their Atmos technology to work in your home. That’s right, you can now have 3D surround sound installation in Chicago.
Imagine watching an action movie like Transformers: Age of Extinction (the first Blu-ray movie that utilized Dolby Atmos technology) in your home theatre on your 3D TV and hearing all the action on your 3D speakers. The sounds from the film will be coming directly at your ears just as the action from the screen will be coming at your face.
Are you more of a gamer than a movie buff? If so, you’re in luck! Dolby Atmos is currently used in Star Wars: Battle Front for PC and should be expanding to more games soon. Older Dolby technologies are used in over 5,000 games so you shouldn’t have to wait long before Atmos technology is utilized in more games. Hopefully it will one day become the standard.
Why do I need it?
If you love watching all of the latest Blu-ray movies on your 3D TV but you don’t have Atmos technology installed in your home theater, you might as well be watching the movie with the sound off. Without 3D sound you’re completing missing out on the full movie experience that the director intended you to enjoy. So, the question really should be “why don’t I have it yet?”
What do I need to buy and where can I buy it?
